Another TriLUG meeting in the can

Thanks to Zenoss for sponsoring the September 2007 TriLUG meeting. Joey Carr gave a great presentation on video editing in Linux, particularly in the use of Kino.
Cristobal Palmer has posted some pictures on Flickr (link).
See everyone on October 11 for a presentation on Alfresco from Jon Cox.

RIP Rub’s Smokehouse

The Triangle lost an oasis today, Rub’s Smokehouse. Rub’s had particular significance for me as the site for our last three openBBQ/openJam events. So long Sampler. So long Double Play. So long Rub’s.
Update 12/5/07: Rub’s returns as Smokey’s BBQ Shack.

Food Drive for Raleigh Rescue Mission
This Thursday, Dec 14, I will be coordinating my yearly food drive at the TriLUG December Meeting at Red Hat in Raleigh, NC. If you’re in the Raleigh area, drop by around 7pm and bring some canned, dry, or other non-perishable goods to help support the Raleigh Rescue Mission. The Mission provides the basics of food, shelter, educational, and vocational training to the homeless and persons of low income.
Sometimes, people aren’t sure what to donate and the food drive receives a most generous assortment of unusual foods. In case anyone is wondering, here are some good examples what is good to donate:
Canned corn, peas, carrots, soups, veg-all, applesauce, oranges, baked beans, chili beans, cranberry sauce
Jars of apple sauce, baby food, pasta sauce
Dry goods such as instant mashed potatoes, dried soups, stuffing, oatmeal, cereal, crackers, baby formula, pasta, mac & cheese
Plastic bottles or other containers of non-perishable juice
If you can’t make it to the TriLUG meeting and want to donate, leave a comment and we’ll see what we can do about making arrangements.

It’s that time of year again….

…so the post-Thanksgiving, pre-Winter Solstice/Hanukkah/Christmas/Kwanza/ season begins. WalMart and Target have ditched the generic greetings “Happy Holidays” in favor of a majority based “Merry Christmas.” I guess they were feeling the backlash from the religious right last year. In any case, Best Buy stands fearless and silly eschewing the traditional greeting.
If you really want to help your fellow man, woman, and child this holiday season, join me in bringing non-perishable foods (cans, dry goods, that sort of thing*) to the Dec 14 TriLUG meeting. All proceeds will be donated to the Raleigh Rescue Mission.
*Let’s leave the Ramen at home this year.

TriLUG event calendar
At the request of Tanner Lovelace, I added the event module to the Drupal configuration on TriLUG’s web site this morning. There’s even an iCal link. If you have ideas or information on how to make the TriLUG web site more useful, please let me know.
